Better Left Unsaid

Say it like a prayer,
Softly and sweetly.

Reverently lay it
Upon an alter.

Make it fine
As perfume
Like Springtime
In bloom.

Never meanly offer it;
Savor the richness.

Love can be harsh
And it can crawl
Across our skin
Like a plague.

Say it in jest,
Watch me crumble.

Laugh at it,
Deliver my death blow.

Those three words,
(That one single line)
Must not be fraudulent.

An “I love you”
In haste
Does nothing
But murder the soul.

I should know,
I lost myself to it
Long ago.
